Luke 12:33-34, “Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
“Bags that wax not old” and “lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven” (Mt 6:20) mean the same thing. The word “bags” is a reference to a purse or money bag that was tied to a girdle. Money bags typically wore out over time. They represent laying up treasures upon the earth. This truth is illustrated by the covetous farmer in verses Lk 12:16-21. However, bags that never wear out represent laying up treasures in heaven or making eternal investments in the kingdom of God. This truth is illustrated in Lk 12:33a, “Sell that ye have, and give alms…”
